Chapter 9

Go time.

The words pounded in Nick's brain as he got up and began to methodically clear his brain of any distractions.

Getting Tess's sister freed and home safely meant he would have to head into dark territory, into a place where his actions would be fast and fierce. Today, he would draw on every bit of skill and cunning he'd learned from his years on the rodeo circuit and as a bush pilot.

As he met Tess for breakfast in the small courtyard of the hotel, he noticed that she did a double-take at the sight of him. He hoped he didn't look as tightly coiled as he felt.

Gone was the laid back cowboy who'd serenaded her last night. In his stead was the focused man who would free her sister.

And one who had a few things he wanted to get clear between them.

Nick pulled out a chair for Tess, helping her get seated even as he motioned for the waitress and ordered them some coffee and a light breakfast.

A young couple dressed as if for a day of exploring the caves occupied a table to their right. The clear light of morning slanted into the courtyard, bringing out the beauty of the numerous hanging baskets filled with a profusion of red and white flowers. On any other day, Nick would have enjoyed sitting in this place with Tess.

But this wasn't just any other day. Today he needed to gather information quickly and determine how Tess was going to hold up in the heat of what this day could bring.

"Tess, what's going on in your personal world? Is there anything or anyone else you know that could be tied to this kidnapping?"

Obviously mulling it over, she took her bottom lip between her teeth for a second before she spoke. "I don't think so. Why?"

"Because I don't want something surprising me or biting me in the butt when I'm focused elsewhere. I need to know if you're going to fall apart under this pressure or if you have a crazed boyfriend who'll track you here and show up at the wrong time and get us all killed."

She wrinkled her nose. "I don't have much of a personal life, Nick, and that includes a crazed boyfriend. It's like I told you—it's one, big, long life at the office for me."

"Anyone special in that life?"

Her gaze narrowed. "This isn't exactly the kind of conversation I thought we'd have this morning. In fact, shouldn't we be heading out? Our driver could be waiting for us out front."

"Our driver will most definitely seek us out when he arrives." Nick leaned back in his chair. "Is there anyone special?" he pressed.

"The only man who's been in my life is my father. He commands a lot of my attention on and off the job. My position in the company requires me to attend functions with him and with his chief financial officer, Jared Armstrong. Jared is... he's the man my father would most like to be his son-in-law."

"Your father wants you to marry Jared Armstrong.
